Kilimanjaro Itinerary - Marangu Route

 

Day 1 - In Transit

• Fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport where you will be transferred to your hotel in Moshi

• This evening you will have dinner and have a detailed briefing from your guide

 

Day 2 - Marangu Gate (1,980 metres) to Mandara Hut (2,700 metres) - 7 km / 4 hours

• One hour transfer from your hotel to Marangu Gate after breakfast at around 8 a.m.

• Sign in at the National Park Gate where the Porters loads are weighed

• Walk to Mandara Hut through the lush jungle spotting wildlife on your way

• Once at the Mandara Hut, walk up to Maundi Crater for acclimatisation and wonderful views

 

Day 3 - Mandara Hut (2,700 metres) to Horombo Hut (3,700 metres) - 11 km / 6 hours

• Hot water is brought to your hut for washing and is followed by breakfast at 7:30 a.m.

• Today you leave the forest and the gradient is very gradual on a very good path

• The views of  both Kibo (mount Kilimanjaro) and Mawenzi are absolutely beautiful

• Once at Horombo Hut you may like to wander up to Zebra Rock which is an hour away

 

Day 4 - Acclimatisation Day  - Stay in Horombo Hut for a second night

• It is very important that you use this day to acclimatise by walking up to 4,400 metres

• Our guides will take you to the Saddle and onto Mawenzi Hut - a 5 to 6 hour walk

• After a late lunch you will rest and prepare yourself for the next stage of the climb

 

Day 5 - Horombo Hut (3,700 metres) to Kibo Hut (4,750 metres) - 10 km / 6 hours

• The vegetation is now sparse as you walk to Kibo Hut at the base of the steeper section

• After an early evening meal at around 17:00 p.m. you will sleep until 23:00 p.m.

• Hot drinks are prepared along with a light snack as you prepare for the summit climb

  

Day 6 - Kibo Hut to Summit (5,895 metres) to Horombo Hut - 18 km / 12 - 16 hours

• You will start off at midnight with your guides using a head torch

• We aim to reach Gilman’s Point (5,685 metres) after about 5 hours taking it very slowly

• Uhuru Peak (5,895 metres) is just over an hour away - we aim to get there for sunrise

• After celebrations and photographs on the summit we descend back to Kibo Hut

• At Kibo Hut we rest for a while and eat before returning back to Horombo Hut for the night

 

Day 7 - Horombo Hut (3,700 metres) to Marangu Gate (1,980 metres) - 18 km / 6 hours

• Retrace your route back to Marangu Gate, stopping at Mandara Hut for lunch

• Meet your transport and return to your hotel in Moshi for your final night

• You will also be presented with your certificates and have the opportunity to tip your guides

 

Day 8 - In Transit

• You will be transferred back to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your return flight

 

Note:- If you depart on a Friday night or a Saturday morning and return on the following Saturday, you only require one week’s annual leave to complete the climb. For example, Kenyan Airways and Virgin Atlantic both fly to Kilimanjaro  from London via Nairobi. There is no camping and you will stay in comfortable huts whilst on the mountain. All food is included except for the two evening meals in Moshi where there is a choice of  good local restaurants.
